Valli Opticians supports Stoptober
Valli Opticians is backing Public Health England’s Stoptober campaign, which challenges people to give up smoking during October.
Smoking damages blood vessels and the structure of the eye with smokers being three times more likely to develop the eye condition macular degeneration than non-smokers.
Moin Valli, owner of Valli Opticians, said: “What many people do not realise is smoking doubles your chances of losing your sight. It causes harm to the tissues of your eye and research has confirmed the harmful effects of smoking on eyesight, particularly in the development of age related macular degeneration (AMD), which is one of the UK’s leading causes of sight loss, and cataracts. Smoking damages blood vessels and the structure of the eye. Smokers are three times more likely to develop macular degeneration than non-smokers.”
During Stoptober, Valli Opticians branches in Huddersfield and Calderdale will be supporting the campaign. The mass 28 day ‘stop smoking’ campaign took place for the first time last year with 160,000 people successfully completing the challenge.
