Summer eye care tips
Here comes the sun
Now that the sunshine has arrived it’s time for all those summer time pursuits such as cycling, swimming, beach sports, hiking, and other outdoor activities.
-
Be careful when spraying bug spray. If bug spray gets fun! But remember to keep your eyes safe during your summer activities and lazy days on the sand, or in the park.
-
Always wear sunglasses that have full UVA/UVB protection.
-
Sand in your eyes? Be sure to flush them completely with water and if necessary see your pharmacist, optometrist or doctor.
-
Remember to apply sunscreen around the eye area and wear sunglasses to protect your eyelids from burning.
-
Chlorine in the swimming pool can cause a chemical irritation in your eyes. To ease this sensation use preservative free artificial tears to flush out your eyes after exposure.
-
Contact lens wearers should be especially careful when underwater in a pool or other water area. Rivers & lakes and sea water carry a variety of microorganisms, the most damaging is called acanthamoeba. This horrible little organism has the ability to attach get behind your contact lens and as a result cause the cornea to become infected. Scarring can occur if the eye is not treated. If possible wear prescription goggles for swimming, but if you must wear contact lenses throw them away as soon as you get out of the water.
