Kamal’s Hospital Marathon

Around three weeks ago Valli Optometrist Kamal Aftab was diagnosed with the blood cancer: Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. Kamal said “It has been one of the toughest challenges of my life. Due to the seriousness of the cancer, I was immediately admitted to hospital and am now several weeks into a three-month treatment involving a cocktail of chemotherapy and a host of other drugs”.

People in Kamal’s situation react in a whole host of different ways; some feel utter despair; others, a sudden sense of mortality or as in most cases a bit of everything.

An optometrist by profession, 32-year old Kamal has always had a passion in volunteering. He loves working for his charity initiatives to offer the gift of sight to sub-Saharan Africans with visual impairments. He’s climbed mountains, run marathons, and had the opportunity to raise tens of thousands of pounds for several UK charities. In fact last year the general public voted Kamal as the 2014-2015 Guardian National Volunteer of the year.

In spite of having been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia only three weeks ago Kamal has challenged himself to complete a very special marathon for charity during his chemotherapy treatment; Kamal will complete a marathon while confined to his five square-metre room, armed only with a pedometer, and a smile.
