Macula Monitoring Service
Valli Opticians Group have teamed up with Huddersfield Chef Ashley Coley to launch two new ‘eye healthy’ food recipes for National Eye Health week (22 – 28 September 2014).
To coincide with this, the Valli Group are also launching their new age-related macular degeneration (AMD) monitoring service. AMD is the number one cause of vision loss and blindness in the over 50s and causes a gradual loss of central vision.
Moin Valli, Managing Director of the Valli Group, said: “Almost two million people in the UK are living with sight loss yet over half of these cases can be avoided so it is vital that you take care of your eyes. A lot of people don’t realise that specific ingredients can be extremely beneficial in maintaining good eye health.”
Food rich in vitamins A, C and E; antioxidants and Omega 3 are essential for good eye health. Such food can help protect against eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration. Spinach, kale, sweet potatoes, bell peppers, broccoli, carrots blueberries, and oily fish, all are excellent eye healthy foods.
Mr Valli added “We’re delighted to have teamed up with Ashley for our range of eye healthy recipes. We’ll be handing out recipes cards to our patients and Ashley will be including them in the veg boxes that he delivers throughout the district.”
There is likely to be a dramatic increase in the number of people in the UK with sight defects. In fact it is predicted that by 2050 the number of people in the UK with sight loss will have doubled to nearly four million.
Mr Valli said: “Sight is the sense people fear losing the most, yet many of us don’t know the best way to look after our eyes. This is why it is so important to get your eyes tested at least every two years even if you think your vision is fine as some eye conditions may not show symptoms.”
